Unwanted habits

We all have habits; some are useful, while others are not. However, all habits stem from subconscious learning or programming. Typically, habits develop from childhood, though some can emerge in adulthood. These unwanted habits are usually formed through the regular repetition of a behavior, which eventually becomes automatic and is executed without conscious thought by the subconscious mind.

Over time, these habits can become automatic responses, often leading us to become unaware of their presence.

Examples include:

a. Obsessions & compulsions

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a relatively common anxiety-related issue affecting approximately 3% of the population. Obsessions may persist despite our desire to resist them and can be effectively treated with clinical hypnotherapy. OCD often develops over time as a coping mechanism for stressful events.

Common anxieties and their associated actions include:

• Fear of contamination (germs, chemicals, bodily waste, etc.) leading to constant cleaning or washing

• Repeatedly checking things, such as ensuring the tap is turned off or the door is locked

• The need for everything to be perfect (tidiness, numbers & alignment, etc.), which results in repeatedly touching things or arranging them in a neat order or reciting numbers and phrases.

Hypnotherapy benefits individuals suffering from OCD symptoms by reducing underlying anxiety, enabling them to regain control. Clinical hypnotherapy is used to retrain the mind, lowering the importance attached to unwanted thoughts. This process can lead to more balanced thought processes by helping individuals separate reality from their imagination.

b. Nail biting & thumb sucking

These common behaviors are often remnants of childhood that provided comfort at an early age. Given the reassurance previously gained, the unconscious behaviors of nail biting or thumb sucking can become conditioned responses to stress.

Clinical hypnotherapy can effectively bring these unconscious actions into conscious awareness, allowing individuals to gain control while also fostering positive thinking and alleviating stress triggers.

c. Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)

Bruxism refers to the grinding of teeth or clenching of jaws, which can cause pain, discomfort, and wear down teeth. It can also lead to headaches and earaches. Most cases of teeth grinding (nearly 80%) occur subconsciously during sleep and are usually associated with stress or anxiety. Bruxism can also manifest while awake, primarily as clenching rather than grinding, often occurring subconsciously during moments of concentration.

Hypnotherapy can help:

• Reduce habitual clenching and grinding

• Eliminate the underlying problems that cause bruxism

• Improve coping mechanisms for stress that may trigger the problem

• Restore confidence and promote a more positive outlook.
