Gut Focused Hypnotherapy & IBS

Gut-focused hypnotherapy (GFH) is a specific form of hypnotherapy that targets the communication pathway between your brain and your digestive system. It’s best known for treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), but it’s also helpful for other gastrointestinal disorders and stress-related digestive issues.

GFH aims to normalise the signals between the brain and gut. This is crucial in conditions like IBS, where the brain often overreacts to normal gut activity, leading to pain, bloating, or irregular bowel habits.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder of the digestive system occurring in over 10% of the population (although it is thought many people with IBS symptoms do not seek medical advice) and is twice as prevalent amongst women as in men. Symptoms may include recurring abdominal pain, spasms or cramps, diarrhoea, constipation, indigestion and nausea.

IBS may have a significant impact on the quality of life, creating anxiety and stress and often limiting activities such as travelling, social interaction, sport & leisure activities, etc.

Clinical hypnotherapy has been proven to be very effective in alleviating the symptoms of IBS and the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) supports treatment of IBS with hypnotherapy under the NHS. The diagnosis of IBS must be determined at by a qualified medical practitioner.

Those suffering from IBS may have an overly sensitive bowel, so that the colon over-responds to slight stresses in daily life and the physical symptoms may be exacerbated by anxiety and stress about the condition which in themselves, may create a vicious circle of symptoms. Clinical hypnotherapy can lessen anxiety as well as mitigating any pain or discomfort.
