Pain control

Stress and pain are intimately linked. Being in pain causes stress and being stressed worsens pain. Hypnotherapy may help break the cycle. Research has shown  that clinical hypnosis is helpful for both acute and chronic pain. In 1996, a panel of the National Institutes of Health found hypnosis to be effective in easing cancer pain. More recent studies have shown its effectiveness for pain related to burns, cancer, and rheumatoid arthritis and reduction of anxiety associated with surgery.

An analysis of 18 studies by researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York revealed moderate to large pain-relieving effects from hypnosis, supporting the effectiveness of hypnotic techniques for pain management. Before hypnotherapy can be used for relieving pain, the source of the pain must always be checked first and it is important to have a thoroughly examined by a doctor to establish the cause of the pain.

a. Migraine

Migraine is a common form of debilitating headache. Various triggers can produce the onset of a migraine. However, reducing the chances of a migraine occurring and getting rid of one once it starts, can be difficult. Studies have been conducted showing that hypnotherapy can be quite beneficial to the migraine sufferer and can in some cases be more beneficial than medications.

b. Dental pain & anxiety

According to a survey by the British Dental Association, about 25% of people are afraid of visiting the dentist. This can be of varying severity, from simple fear of toothache or of the possibility of injury, to a more pathological phobia of dentistry and dental care, where patients experience tension at even the thought of visiting the dentists.

Hypnodontia is an aspect of dental treatment the use of hypnosis in dentistry. By its generalized anti-anxiety effects, hypnotherapy can increase overall patient comfort, make the dental experience acceptable and bearable, decrease resistance to future intervention, and through posthypnotic suggestions, encourage more rapid recovery.
