There are many mistaken beliefs about hypnosis and hypnotherapy. We have explained some of the more frequently asked questions below and at Positive-Hypnosis, we are happy to talk to you in a caring and confidential manner if you have any additional questions or concerns.
HOW DOES CLINICAL HYPNOTHERAPY WORK?
The subconscious mind is the source of many of our problems, self-images, and our beliefs, habits, and behaviours are stored there as information. The subconscious is a tremendous reservoir of our unrecognised strengths and knowledge. Hypnosis is a natural and effective technique for accessing the subconscious mind - the key to unleashing our potential, changing our unwanted habits and behaviours, and finding solutions to our problems and concerns, including confidence building.
Any therapeutic intervention implies change, so entering a hypnotic or trance state alone does not signify a therapeutic endpoint. Once an individual has achieved a trance state, the hypnotherapist may employ various hypnosis techniques, ranging from simple suggestions to psychoanalysis (for example, the therapist may ask about past, present, or future concerns to establish the reasons for the problem). Alternatively, the therapist may give suggestions to the subconscious mind aimed at overcoming specific problems such as lack of self-confidence or pain control.
Some uses, such as calming a person, require minimal change on the part of the individual while more complex behaviour patterns, such as overeating, treatment of panic disorders, or (non-clinical) depression, require a more complex therapeutic intervention together with psychological and behavioural homework, often focusing on stress management.
HOW CAN A TREATMENT AIMED AT YOUR MIND AFFECT YOUR BODY?
The body responds physically to thoughts. For example, when we think a frightening thought, we can experience increased heart rate, shortness of breath, "butterflies" in the stomach, muscular rigidity, sweating, shaking, and so on. Similarly, when we think a pleasurable thought, we can experience reduced heart rate, deeper breathing, relaxation of muscles, and more. These are autonomic nervous system responses that are involuntary, but they can be utilized to promote health.
